The Crested Butte Mountain Bike Park opens in June. The bike park has over 30 miles of lift-served MTB trails via the Red Lady Express lift. Many of the downhill trails connect to nearby cross-country trails including Snodgrass, Happy Hour and Tony’s, which take you off the resort.

The Adventure Park opens in the summer. Kids can rock climb, bungee jump on a trampoline and pan for fake gems at the Adventure Park. Other summer activities at CBMR include disc golf, archery, hiking and scenic lift rides on the Silver Queen Express and Red Lady Express. The Crested Butte Peak Hike is two miles roundtrip from the top of the Silver Queen Express and 9 miles roundtrip from the base area.

Events at Crested Butte Mountain Resort

Crested Butte Mountain Resort hosts a variety of events throughout the year. Catch live music after a day of skiing in the winter or on a summer evening. Crested Butte’s famous Chili and Beer Festival is held every fall at the base area of CBMR. Holiday events include the New Year’s Eve Torchlight Parade and a visit from Santa around Christmas. Blister Summit, a consumer gear testing event, is held in February.

Snodgrass and the 401 are two iconic mountain bike trails in Mt. Crested Butte. The Snodgrass trailhead is about two miles up the road from CBMR. This trail is dotted with wildflowers in the summer. It offers beautiful views of Crested Butte Mountain and Whetstone Mountain. 401 is at the top of Schofield Pass. This trail is known for its steady and flowy downhill.

Hiking in Mt. Crested Butte

Hiking trails in Mt. Crested Butte include Judd Falls Trail, Oh Be Joyful Trail, Crested Butte Mountain Summit Trail and Rustler’s Gulch Trail. Experience Crested Butte’s explosion of wildflowers by taking a summer hike. Catch them at their peak around mid-July.

Off-roading in Mt. Crested Butte

Paradise Divide and Schofield Pass are popular OHV routes near Mt. Crested Butte. This scenic drive provides stunning views of Maroon Bells and the West Elk Mountains. Take Gothic Road (County Road 317) past Snodgrass and the Rocky Mountain Biological Laboratory. After you reach the top of Paradise Divide, you’ll drop onto Slate River Road in Crested Butte. High clearance and 4-wheel-drive is recommended for this road.

Rocky Mountain Biological Laboratory

Rocky Mountain Biological Laboratory (RMBL) is a research station in the old townsite of Gothic, Colorado. RMBL offers free tours of the townsite from June to September. Stop in at the visitor’s center for a snack, and souvenirs and to learn more about the research at RMBL.

Public transportation in Mt. Crested Butte

Utilize the free public transportation, Mountain Express, in Mt. Crested Butte to get to CBMR or the town of Crested Butte. Mountain Express also offers a service called FirstTracks. This on-demand shuttle service picks you up right at your door. It can connect you with the Mountain Express town shuttle, CBMR or the Gunnison Valley RTA.

The RTA is a free valley-wide bus that runs between Gunnison and Crested Butte. There is one RTA stop in Mt. Crested Butte at the base area of CBMR.

The town of Mt. Crested Butte

Mt. Crested Butte is a small community with a handful of amenities. There is also a small store that sells grocery staples and has an attached liquor store in Mt. Crested Butte. Head to Crested Butte and Gunnison for more restaurant and grocery options. Rent gear or purchase forgotten items like ski gloves or sunglasses at one of the gear shops near the base area. Small shops in the hotel lobbies also sell items like sunscreen and snacks.

Most of the dining options are at Crested Butte Mountain Resort on the mountain and at the base area. Butte 66, Coal Breaker Coffee Co. and Rooster Run are in the Treasury Center and are good lunch spots. Dinner, coffee, ice cream, burgers and more can be found around the base area. Paradise Warming House, Uley’s Cabin and The Umbrella Bar are on the mountain and serve drinks, snacks and lunch. Uley’s Cabin has specialty drinks and Colorado-inspired fare. A reservation is recommended.
