Western Colorado University serves about 3,500 students from its campus in Gunnison. Surrounded by hiking and biking trails, and just a short drive from Crested Butte Mountain Resort, the university provides students with easy access to outdoor recreation in addition to its academic offerings. Gunnison County would be unrecognizable without Western—the university is one of the area’s largest employers and a major driver of the county’s economy. Small class sizes give Western Colorado University students a personalized, hands-on education. Students at Western gain a combination of traditional liberal arts curricula and immersive practical experience. Western offers more than 100 areas of academic study in both undergraduate and graduate programs.

Western’s new nursing program will launch in fall 2026. Work is already underway to prepare facilities for future nursing students. With grant funding and support from the Gunnison Valley Health Foundation, the university built a cutting-edge Simulation Lab, where students will practice their skills on lifelike mannikins. Local high school students will also have access to the facility.
Western Colorado University students are required to live in on-campus their first two years.

Western Colorado University is home to the ICELab, an organization devoted to diversifying the Valley’s economy and helping local businesses succeed. The ICELab offers a coworking space, private office spaces and a conference room. Students receive free access to the ICELab @ Western coworking space.
The ICELab’s location in Escalante Terrace on the Western campus positions it to effectively connect Gunnison County businesses with students seeking jobs or internships.
ICELab staff designed an entrepreneurship course called New Venture Creation at the Rady School of Computer Science and Engineering. Student entrepreneurs (even those not enrolled in the course) may also receive free product and business consulting.

Gunnison County’s location within two million acres of public lands gives Western students easy access to mountain biking, hiking, boating, fishing and hunting.
Located at an altitude of 7,703 feet, Gunnison is surrounded by a wilderness area, BLM and National Forest land. The Signal Peak trail system is adjacent to Western’s campus, and trails at Hartman Rocks are just a few minutes away. The Gunnison River flows into nearby Blue Mesa Reservoir, Colorado’s largest lake.
Western’s proximity to epic skiing at Crested Butte Mountain Resort also makes it one of the best schools for skiers and snowboarders. Students can hop on the free RTA bus and be skiing the steep slopes of Crested Butte Mountain Resort in less than an hour.
Nordic skiing is also a popular pastime for Western students, with large groomed trail networks at Hartman Rocks in Gunnison and CB Nordic in Crested Butte.
Gunnison County would be unrecognizable without Western. The university generates jobs, attracts visitors and facilitates local spending on capital projects and operations.

Faculty, staff and student groups bring visiting speakers, filmmakers, poets, scientists and politicians to campus. That’s on top of concerts and movie screenings. The university’s Mountaineer Field House is also available for community use. The facility includes an indoor track, cardio and weight room, an aquatics center, spin studio, climbing wall and more.
