Gunnison Trails

What is Gunnison Trails?

Gunnison Trails is a nonprofit organization that maintains more than 60 miles of multi-use trail around Gunnison, Colorado. They promote sustainable trail use throughout Gunnison County by educating trail users on responsible trail-based recreation. They also pursue new opportunities for mountain biking, running and hiking trails. Gunnison Trails was founded in 2006 and have been literal trailblazers in the growing trail systems around Gunnison, including Signal Peak and Hartman Rocks. Check out their helpful trail maps to plan your next ride or hike.

Gunnison Trails also grooms the winter trails at Hartman Rocks for cross-country skiing and fat biking. Check out their winter grooming report for updates.

How can I get involved with Gunnison Trails?

Volunteer, give or race in the Growler

The best way to help is to roll up your sleeves and volunteer. Gunnison Trails’ professional trail crew needs help maintaining the awesome trails at Hartman Rocks and Signal Peak. Build new trail and maintain the classics at Trailwork Tuesdays during the summer. The organization’s biggest fundraiser is the annual Original Growler race in May. The Growler is a challenging, technical mountain bike race through some of the best trails at Hartman Rocks during Memorial Day weekend. Choose from 20-, 32- and 40-mile routes. Race fees support trail design, building and maintenance. Gunnison Trails also hosts other annual events, including Ales for Trails. Can’t make it in person? Donate or become a member

The history of MTB in Gunnison

Where the sport of mountain biking began

In the 1970s, some so-called crazy folks in the Gunnison Valley started riding bikes on the nearby dirt roads. The sport took off, eventually resulting in the development of a trail network and some epic MTB races at Gunnison’s Hartman Rocks. Watch the two short Born From Junk films for free here.
