Inside the GCB Freeride Summit Experience

When The North Face, HEAD / Tyrolia, Garmin, and Alo Yoga, leaders in mountain performance, exploration, and recovery, come together in one place, you know the experience is going to be epic and built with intention. That was the foundation of the GCB Freeride Summit: a four-day winter retreat built to reflect how professional skiers actually experience Crested Butte. The summit provided long days on snow, big terrain, thoughtful recovery and time spent engaging with Crested Butte. A group of professional athletes who know freeride skiing intimately, including John Collinson, Hunter Hansen and Madison Leigh Elrick, came out to ski Crested Butte’s legendary steeps. Steal the itinerary these brands and athletes followed for your next Colorado ski trip to Crested Butte.

Day 1: Arrival & Settling In

How to Travel to the Gunnison Valley

Flying into Gunnison-Crested Butte Regional Airport (GUC) is the easiest way to get to the Gunnison Valley and puts you less than an hour from Crested Butte Mountain Resort. The drive from Gunnison to Crested Butte offers views of snow-covered fields, distant ridgelines and the Elk Mountains. The schedule for arrival day was intentionally light. The athletes had time to check in, get oriented and let the pace of the Gunnison Valley replace travel mode.

Where to Stay in the Gunnison Valley

They stayed slopeside at Elevation Hotel & Spa, where ski-in/ski-out access, on-site dining and a full-service spa make it easy to settle in without overplanning. Staying close to the mountain means less time in transit and more time resting, an approach you can mirror when building your own Crested Butte itinerary.

Where to Eat on Day One in the Gunnison Valley

Everyone had dinner on Elk Avenue at Sunflower the first night. With a cozy and welcoming atmosphere, it’s an easy introduction to town and the kind of place that invites you to slow down. The evening wrapped with a recovery-focused yoga session at Elevation, supported by Alo Yoga. Comfortable performance layers, women in Accolade sweats, men in Chill sweats, made it easy to move, stretch and unwind after a travel day.

Find lodging that is right for your budget and group, and keep your first day simple to ease into things.

Day 2: Expert Skiing at Crested Butte Mountain Resort & Après

The athletes spent day two skiing Crested Butte’s iconic terrain. Crested Butte Mountain Resort has some of the most respected and legendary expert skiing in Colorado. Groomers, glades and freeride terrain provide a variety of options depending on what you’re looking for. Spearheaded by The North Face and HEAD/Tyrolia, the on-mountain focus was confident and intentional skiing. Shredding in Crested Butte requires adapting to conditions and letting the terrain and weather dictate the rhythm.

What to Wear to Ski in the Gunnison Valley

Athletes skied in The North Face Summit Series outerwear, built for long days where staying warm and dry is a non-negotiable. Underfoot, everyone skied HEAD’s Kore collection paired with Tyrolia’s hybrid Attack bindings, a versatile setup that can handle everything from fast resort laps to more technical terrain. If you’re looking for a similar one-ski solution, you can demo comparable setups through local shops during your trip.

Staying Safe While Skiing in the Gunnison Valley

Throughout the day, Garmin played a quiet but important role. fēnix® 8 watches tracked long hours on snow, while inReach® Mini 3 Plus added peace of mind, a smart consideration for anyone skiing consequential terrain or pushing farther across the mountain. A mid-day stop at A Bar Above offered a chance to refuel before heading back out for afternoon laps.

Where to Eat on Day Two in the Gunnison Valley

As the lifts closed, the day shifted into après at José’s inside the Matchstick Productions Lounge. Ski films rolled on the screens as stories from the day carried on, with Montanya Distillers cocktails and light bites keeping the energy relaxed and social. Later, a short ride into town led to a nightcap and thoughtfully crafted desserts at Two Twelve, offering a quiet close to a big day.

Plan a full ski day, then leave room for après — Crested Butte is best when you pace it, not rush it.

Day 3: Backcountry Skiing, Elk Avenue & Local Experiences

Backcountry Skiing with a Guide in the Gunnison Valley

Day three widened the lens beyond lift-served terrain. With Irwin Guides leading the way, the group headed into the backcountry near Snodgrass Mountain. Earning turns offered a quieter perspective of the valley and highlighted just how much terrain lies beyond the resort boundary. Garmin inReach devices were used throughout the day as part of standard safety practices, a reminder that preparation and awareness are part of experiencing Crested Butte responsibly. Visitors interested in backcountry skiing are encouraged to go with a guide and ensure they have the right skills and equipment to safely navigate avalanche terrain.

Some athletes visited the spa at Elevation, some soaked in hot tubs, and some visited Elk Avenue to explore shops, galleries, and cafés at an unhurried pace. The day ended with dinner at Public House, showcasing the town’s western roots and local food culture.

Where to Get a Unique Souvenir in the Gunnison Valley

After dinner, Björkstam Hat Co. provided a lasting takeaway. Athletes customized leather ski gloves to bring home. This is a hands-on, local experience you can recreate by branding your own gloves or shaping a custom hat for a meaningful souvenir from your trip.
