Flying is the easiest and fastest way to get to the Gunnison Valley. Gate-to-gate travel time from DFW to GUC is about 2.5 hours. GUC is only five minutes from downtown Gunnison. Summer is a beautiful and fun time of year to visit the Gunnison Valley. Wildflowers are blooming, trails are open and bluebird days beckon. There are over two million acres of public land in the Gunnison Valley to explore. Some of the Gunnison Valley’s best summer activities include mountain biking, hiking and fishing. Mountain bikers have over 1,200 miles of trails to explore, 800 of which are single track.

Hikers can enjoy mellow trails close to town or push themselves to bag some peaks. Anglers can lake or river fish on Gold Medal waters and Colorado’s largest reservoir. Places to Stay in the Gunnison Valley

The Gunnison Valley is made up of a handful of small mountain towns. Gunnison, Crested Butte, Almont, Mt. Crested Butte and Pitkin all offer places to stay.

Gunnison: Stay here for no-frills, traditional hotels. Many offer free breakfast and have a pool. Other options include a hostel, small inns, vacation rentals, and a one-room bed and breakfast.

Crested Butte: Stay here for quaint inns, cozy bed and breakfasts, boutique hotels, and vacation homes.

Almont: Stay here for rustic cabins, camping and large cabin resorts. Most lodging is along the river, creating a bucolic and scenic environment.

Pitkin: Stay here for lushly furnished rooms in a newly renovated historic hotel, vacation rentals or cabins with beautiful views of the Gunnison National Forest.

Mt. Crested Butte: Stay here for luxurious vacation rentals and resort-style hotels.

Transportation in the Gunnison Valley

Transportation options in the Gunnison Valley include car rentals, shuttle services, and free public transportation: the Mountain Express Shuttle, First Tracks, and the Gunnison Valley RTA.

Avis, Budget and Hertz rent cars out of GUC. Many hotels offer free airport shuttles. Alpine Express, Rocky Rides Ltd., Dolly’s Mountain Shuttle and Black Canyon Limo are shuttle services for hire. Some also offer trailhead drop-offs and pickups.

The Mountain Express Shuttle and FirstTracks are Crested Butte’s free public transportation options. Mountain Express runs throughout Mt. Crested Butte and Crested Butte every 15 minutes. FirstTracks is an on-demand shuttle service in Crested Butte that will pick you up at your front door and take you anywhere in the Mt. Crested Butte service area. Both options can transport bikes.

The Gunnison Valley RTA runs valley-wide. It makes several stops in Gunnison, one in Crested Butte at the 4-Way and one in Mt. Crested Butte at the base area of Crested Butte Mountain Resort. The bus runs every 15-30 minutes, depending on the time of day. The RTA has front bike racks.

Please note: none of the free public transportation stops at the airport or are equipped to carry luggage.
