Jeff Kendall-Weed achieved fame on YouTube for his technical mountain biking skills and passionate deep-dives into all aspects of the sport. So it’s no surprise that when he visited Crested Butte and Gunnison, he chose some of the area’s gnarliest rides. The wide-ranging geography of Gunnison County allowed him to ride a mountaintop epic, a high desert trail system and a lift-served bike park—all just a short drive from one another. A few local legends joined him on the rides, including the winner of the men’s single-speed category of the Original Growler race, the executive director of the Crested Butte Mountain Bike Association, and the Western Colorado University Mountain Sports mountain bike team. Watch the video below and keep reading to learn more about Jeff Kendall-Weed’s mountain biking tour of the Gunnison Valley.
Watch the video below for a summary of Jeff Kendall-Weed’s visit to Crested Butte and Gunnison, where he and some colorful local guides ride Hartman Rocks, the Crystal Peak-Star Pass loop, and the Crested Butte Mountain Bike Park.
In the first segment of the video, Jeff Kendall-Weed explores the decomposed granite trails at Hartman Rocks Recreation Area, a sprawling maze of rock formations near the city of Gunnison, Colorado. There’s no one better to show him around than JT Ryan, a Gunnison resident and winner of the men’s single-speed category of the Original Growler. (The Growler, a mountain bike race run by local nonprofit Gunnison Trails every Memorial Day weekend, tours 32 miles of Hartman’s trails.)
JT and his friends, a group of hard-charging Gunnison dads who also ride single-speed bikes, show Jeff their favorite corners of Hartman Rocks. They ride some of Hartman’s famous trails, like Rattlesnake, and a few hidden gems, including Freefall and Swoosh. They even brought Jeff a single-speed bike to try for the ride. They discuss the pure, back-to-basics feeling of riding a single-speed, and how that feeling sometimes gets lost in today’s high-tech bike culture.

The Crystal Peak and Star Pass loop ranks among Crested Butte’s beefiest mountain bike routes. Peaking at 12,300 feet, this high-alpine epic packs a punch. Jeff Kendall-Weed rides with local icon Dave Ochs, the executive director of the Crested Butte Mountain Bike Association. While they catch their breath on the Crystal Peak trail climb, Dave gives Jeff a lay of the land, pointing out that the town of Aspen lies just beyond the peaks to the north. Dave also mentions that the Crested Butte Mountain Bike Association, known as CBMBA, made history as the first mountain biking club and now maintains more than 500 miles of trails on the north side of Gunnison County.
After topping out at a saddle, Jeff and Dave take in the blooming July wildflowers and the stunning vistas above treeline. They descend Star Pass, Double Top and Hunters Creek, with Jeff showing off his signature manuals down the steep, rocky trail that most riders simply hang on for.

The lift-served bike park at Crested Butte Mountain Resort offers steep, boulder-littered trails that entice hard-charging riders. Jeff Kendall-Weed met Jason Tullous, the coach of the Western Colorado University Mountain Sports mountain biking team, to show him what the student-athletes were up to and to ride the trails together. Jason cited a huge array of trails and easy public lands access as a benefit of attending the university, which is in Gunnison. Jeff noted that riding on his college mountain bike team gave him treasured memories and lifelong friends.
The Crested Butte Mountain Bike Park offers a range of trails, from easy greens like Rollercoaster, to trails with tabletop jumps like Frequency, to burly black diamond runs like Avery. Learn more about the bike park in our guide to the Crested Butte Mountain Bike Park trails.
