Live Music Sunday 3 – 6 PM: Evelyn Roper is planted in roots music. Her songwriting reflects that with an emphasis on the story songs, although they may be backed with a genre not limited to Western or Country while Swing, Surf, blues, and Rockabilly, feed her driving beats. Live shows may include all roots genres if her audience demands one or another. Linda Ronstadt and Emmylou Harris are artists some compare her to but her voice is her own! Her song "Opal Moon" has been described as " the Western song, poem, and painting of the year" during a showcase event. 25 years of solid experience as a solo artist, duo, and frontman of her band Opal Moon, a member of Johnny Kongo All Stars (Rockabilly) duo with Zona Wood as Original Recipe in Arizona, give credence to what she produces. Singing with a Western Show Band and several years as a weekly solo performer showcases her commitment to professionalism and variety. Chris Coady and Will Dudley, accomplished singer/songwriters have hired Evelyn as a backup singer on their produced CDs. She also has recorded her material. Evelyn has opened for The Charlie Daniels Band, The Bellamy Brothers, Asleep at The Wheel, Dale Watson, Little Texas, Ian Tyson, Dave Stamey, Don Edwards, Michael Martin Murphey, MMM West Fest, Pam Tillis, Dean Dillon, Pure Prairie League, and various songwriter events.
Gunnison Valley is also host to several beloved annual events. A classic winter event is The Alley Loop, a Nordic ski race that doubles as a costume contest. In fall, Mt. Crested Butte hosts the famous Chili and Beer Festival. Every summer in Gunnison, a crowd gathers to watch America’s fourth-oldest rodeo, Cattlemen’s Days. There are also festivals in Crested Butte that celebrate local art, music, wildflowers, and more. Attending an annual event is a good way to connect with the culture of the Gunnison Valley. You might even create a new tradition for you and your family and friends!
