Firebird Theatre Co. proudly presents the last event in our Staged Readings Series for the 2024 season! This September, Firebird has the privilege of being able to bring to life a new, original play for the first time right here in the Gunnison Valley. Directed by Sam Robards and featuring tons of local talent, Michael Panes’ new play Death House Jamboree is a dark comedy about family, absolution, and the death penalty, set in the execution viewing chamber of a Texas prison. On the execution date for a felon convicted of murder, the God-fearing (and slightly dysfunctional) family of the victim come to watch the punishment for closure. But when two reporters and the victim’s ex-girlfriend show up, things get a little…messy. Death House Jamboree has coarse language and deals with mature themes – viewer discretion is advised. The play is suitable for audiences aged 13 and up. This reading will be performed at the LoBar by the Secret Stash in Crested Butte on Wednesday, September 25th. The event will begin at 7:00pm and run for approximately 90 minutes. Tickets are $15 for general admission. Seating is limited, so make sure to reserve your ticket at www.firebirdcb.com/staged-readings/ beforehand! We hope to see you there!
Gunnison Valley is also host to several beloved annual events. A classic winter event is The Alley Loop, a Nordic ski race that doubles as a costume contest. In fall, Mt. Crested Butte hosts the famous Chili and Beer Festival. Every summer in Gunnison, a crowd gathers to watch America’s fourth-oldest rodeo, Cattlemen’s Days. There are also festivals in Crested Butte that celebrate local art, music, wildflowers, and more. Attending an annual event is a good way to connect with the culture of the Gunnison Valley. You might even create a new tradition for you and your family and friends!
