Federal lands comprise 85% of the Gunnison Valley. YOUR trails, rivers and public lands will be OPEN as the snow melts, but personnel cuts at the Forest Service, Bureau of Land Management and Park Service mean all of us will need to keep stewardship top of mind this summer. Pack out all trash, and be extra careful with fire. Together, we can keep our backcountry beautiful!

Bull Fest

August 16 @ 2:00 pm - 10:00 pm

Varies

Gunnison Tough looks forward to carrying on local Tough Enough To Wear Pink traditions this summer through a new event…BULL FEST! Thanks to our partners, Tough Enough to Wear Pink and Wrangler Bucking Cancer! Presented by our Title Sponsor, Teton Ridge! Don’t put away your pink apparel and dancing boots just yet! Come celebrate Tough Enough to Wear Pink’s 20th anniversary at the Gunnison County Fairgrounds! Gunnison Tough continues to partner with the national Tough Enough to Wear Pink organization as we keep expanding our programs to meet the needs of our local community in the fight against ALL cancers. KICK OFF PARTY We will be throwing a kick off party with music, country dance instruction, youth ranching games, cowboy poetry… lots of fun activities for all ages! BULL RIDING AND BULLFIGHTING Eight teams competing to win and lots of exciting action! In American freestyle bullfighting, bullfighters face a bull without a rider for a set time, are scored on technique, risk-taking, and how well they maneuver and engage with the bull. Bullfighters are commonly seen in rodeo, protecting bull riders who have been thrown off a bull by distracting and drawing attention away from the rider, allowing the rider to safely exit the arena. Unlike traditional bullfighting, the bull is not harmed in American freestyle bullfighting. BARN DANCE HOEDOWN Immediately after the Bull riding and fighting event, stick around for a family-friendly country barn dance hoedown outside and under the roof at Fred Field Center featuring John King!

Annual events in Crested Butte and Gunnison

Gunnison Valley is also host to several beloved annual events. A classic winter event is The Alley Loop, a Nordic ski race that doubles as a costume contest. In fall, Mt. Crested Butte hosts the famous Chili and Beer Festival. Every summer in Gunnison, a crowd gathers to watch America’s fourth-oldest rodeo, Cattlemen’s Days. There are also festivals in Crested Butte that celebrate local art, music, wildflowers, and more. Attending an annual event is a good way to connect with the culture of the Gunnison Valley. You might even create a new tradition for you and your family and friends!
