9 Unforgettable Winter Activities for Dallas Families

Winter in Dallas means a few things: The Cowboys are usually playoff contenders most years and most activities revolve around being inside, and an ice storm or two passes through.

Colorado winters, specifically in the Gunnison Valley, mean a few things as well: Snow piles taller than houses, the ski lifts at Crested Butte are spinning, and kids everywhere are outside playing ’til sundown. We invite you to escape the unpredictable Texas winter and enjoy a relaxing pace with your family. You won’t be disappointed with all that our cozy mountain towns have to offer:

1. Skiing for Every Skill Level

It’s what we’re known for come winter. The ski lifts start turning and don’t stop until April, which is practically summer in Texas. Crested Butte Mountain offers plenty of trails for everyone from bunny hill beginners to the hardcore downhillers.

2. Curl Up Next To The Fire

There’s something magical about having your family around you, sipping on hot chocolate, slowing down, and watching the snow fall. Life can be hectic most of the time, but this is the place to unwind and enjoy our pace.

3. Adventure Park & Children’s Museum

Located at the base of the mountain, the Children’s Museum offers arts and crafts, puzzles, and just all around fun. The Adventure Park includes bungee jumping, mini golf, a bag jump, tubing, and a rock wall. Don’t feel like skiing today? This is a great way to be around the mountains, without leaving the base area.

4. Movie Night

The Majestic Theatre, located in Crested Butte, serves of the usual snacks in addition to some great craft beer offerings. This isn’t your big megaplex theater either; think comfortable and affordable with high-tech visual and audio. Choose from three different movies at a time.

5. Ice Skating

Whether you’re looking for indoor or outdoor ice skating, Jorgensen Ice Arena has it. Located right off of Highway 50 in Gunnison, rent skates and be on the ice in no time. There is a large indoor rink, a hockey rink outside, and a small pond right outside too! Ice skating in Crested Butte South and Crested Butte is open as well.

6. Build a Snowman

Rumor is Dallas gets the occasional snow, but enough to build a 15 foot snowman in town?

7. Stroll through Town

Local boutiques, restaurants, museums, coffee shops, and more fill Elk Ave and Main Street. You won’t find any chains in Crested Butte and very few in Gunnison, which provide one-of-a-kind gifts and purchase opportunities.

8. Dog Sledding

We know you can do that in Texas. We’ve got the snow and the dogs willing to take you for a ride. Bring the family and hold on tight!

9. Try Something New

Vacation is the time to try something new with the whole family! What haven’t you done?

We’ve got it all here! Bond with the family and enjoy the adventure. The Gunnison Valley is your home away from home this winter.
