Explore the Alpine Plateau with Arrowhead Mountain Adventures! See some of the best views of the Colorado San Juan Mountain Range on what used to be a stagecoach trail to Lake City. We have many old mining, logging, and stock drive trails that are perfect for our offerings of Polaris RZR or General Side-by-sides and Polaris Snowmobiles
Arrowhead Mountain Adventures is a Polaris Adventures Outfitter providing side-by-side and snowmobile rentals and tours. Located in the Northeast San Juan Mountains near Uncompahgre Mountain. We are open seasonally, in the summer from June till October and December through April.
What to see when riding our area:
Be on the lookout for carvings on the Aspen Trees left by over a century of sheepherders, who are still active on the plateau in the summertime. Some of these carvings are dated, the oldest one found so far is dated 1917!
Be sure to check out the scene from Big Blue Campground, where you will find the “ranger station”, a homestead from 1917 that the Forrest Service has kept maintained in its original glory, this is also where the moose hang out.
We are located at the trailhead, and next to Arrowhead Mountain Lodge where you can grab a bite to eat at their restaurant or make a room reservation.
Our location is amazing for hitting up all the best attractions in Southwest Colorado!
Off our dirt road, Alpine Plateau rd. will lead you to the single-track trail head for the “Alpine Trail” a premier dirt-bike trail. Those who discover this part of the Alpine Trail (Big Blue Campground to Owl Creek) do not share with others because it is that good.
Within a 20 min to an hour drive of our location:
Blue Mesa Reservoir and the Curecanti National Recreation Area, the largest body of water in Colorado with the largest population of Kokanee Salmon in the lower 48.
Morrow Point Boat Tour, take a boat trip through the east end of the Black Canyon, starting from the Blue Mesa dam to Morrow Point Reservoir.
Morrow Point Dam: The largest concrete dam in Colorado, one of the owners’ favorite spots. Be sure to stop into Newberry’s store and say “Hi” to Jimmy Newberry, a legendary free climber, as featured in the “Colorado Black Canyon” book.
Black Canyon National Park, is better than the Grand Canyon!
Lake City, the most remote town in Colorado. Our dirt road will get you there faster than pavement, not so remote to us. Lake City is the gateway to the Alpine Loop, Engineer and Cinnamon Pass. Check out Rock Pirates, another Polaris Adventures outfitter, to rent a side-by-side to ride those areas out of Lake City.
The City of Gunnison, a cute Mountain town and home to Western State University.
The City of Montrose, a bigger, feeder city with all the offerings of a “big city”.
1.5 hours to 2 hours from us:
Ouray, Hot springs and the start of the Million Dollar Highway
Telluride, Home to Imogene and Black Bear Passes
Grand Mesa, the largest flat top Mountain in the world and an active volcano!
Crested Butte, Ski town and start of Kebler Pass, considered one of the premier places for fall colors (only because most people have not been to Arrowhead yet)
Grand Junction, the largest city on the western-slope and home to the Colorado Nation Monument Park
