For Our Friends Who Visit Gunnison-Crested Butte

To: Our Friends Who Visit Gunnison-Crested Butte

From: Us

We are devastated by Covid 19. Some of our neighbors have tested positive. Almost 300 are self-quarantined with symptoms. Our favorite ski mountain is closed. Our restaurants are closed. Our retailers are closed. Those most economically fragile are taking a beating.

Proving that we are part of the real world, there is no toilet paper anywhere.

Taking the long view, we are closed to visitation. More than just our economic lifeblood. Our lifeblood.

We don’t know what’s next any more than you do. Will we be able to invite you back for Memorial Day? June? July?

Right now, the back-country skiing is good. The Nordic Center is grooming its tracks not for all of us, but for just us locals. Helping keep us sane.

Fishing is hit or miss.

Hartman’s will melt out in April. Trails for us? Or for all of us?

The rivers will rise and we’ll go boating. The Green Drake hatch will hit. The North Valley trails like Cement Creek, the Lupines and Tony’s will open. The flowers will bloom.

We’ve quarantined the valley and most of us are self-isolating, a term two weeks ago we’d never heard of. Most of us agree that if we had to be stuck somewhere, we are lucky to be stuck here. Our almost painfully beautiful valley is intact, and the season is changing.

When can we invite you back? We just don’t know. But we’ll let you know when we can.

Peace to all of you and good health, too.

    • I’m so sorry that you guys are faced with this battle – I admire the attitude and hope this passes quickly.

  4. May God encompass your sweet town and keep all the locals safe!! I have reservations for the week of July 4th sure hope we can visit. CB is my go to place for rest and family time. Big hugs to all, DEANNA from Mckinney Texas.

  5. Just a few days ago, our Crested Butte house was filled with 8 people, including a three year old granddaughter who skied the “magic carpet” for the first time and sledded down the sled hill having a great time. Thank goodness we got those activities accomplished before the reality of the virus sunk in and we made plans to leave prematurely. Every moment in life is precious. We will return.

  6. “Most of us are self isolating?”
Following what has happened in the Lombardy region of Italy where my husband and I like to spend time, the medical news from there, has strongly stated that 100% self isolation needs to be our immediate goal here NOW!
Our tourism based economy is taking a massive beating from having a large Covid-19 positive reading. Some of those people who are now experiencing the illness, are our friends and neighbors.
Please people, none of us are immune from this virus and the longer we continue to minimize or ignore it, the longer our fragile tourism based economy will tragically be affected by our own selfishness.
Shelter in place, self isolation, whatever you want to call it, is , out of necessity, the cutting edge fashion.
We are so incredibly blessed to live in a beautiful part of the world.
Let’s do our part to stop the spread of Covid-19. Hopefully, our mountain tourism based economies will be able to bounce back sooner than later.
    This affects ALL of US!

  7. We have two trips planned to your wonderful town. Hopefully we can come in July and September. I appreciate your letter. It really demonstrates the humanity of your community. Other than the natural beauty, the people and their warm and friendly ways make us want to come back. My wife and I have traveled a lot, Crested Butte feels like home. Best wishes to all of you.

  8. You are all in my thoughts & prayers. I check the site daily to check on all of you. I pray the number of infected people stays low and those who have it can survive it. I feel like the Gunnison / Piitkin area is my second home though I live in Kansas. It gets harder and harder for me to leave and return to Kansas each time cause my heart is there with you all. Please take care of yourselves.

    • Right now! The county is asking that anyone that does plan to use their property and isn’t a permanent resident to fill out an anonymous form so we know how many people are in the county and can adjust our modeling based on that number. You can find that form here.
