Western State Colorado University
Western, located right in downtown Gunnison is a great resource. The marketing department may be able to connect you to students who would be interested in working on your project.
In addition, Western is home to the ICELab, a modern co-working facility. Memberships include punch passes, daily drop-ins, monthly, dedicated desks, and dedicated offices.

Filming Permits
Do you think Gunnison, Crested Butte, Mt Crested Butte, or our public lands is the perfect setting for your shoot? If so you may need a filming permit. Gunnison County is home to several Federal Lands Agencies, three municipalities, and local land owners. Depending on the kind of filming project you may need a permit or to give a heads up that you’ll be filming.

Please contact the town clerk for more information. Crested Butte also asks that you let the Crested Butte’s Marshall office know if you’re filming anything regardless of permit needs.

Other Entities’ Permit Requirements
Crested Butte Mountain Resort
If you’d like to shoot anything at Crested Butte Mountain Resort, Matt Feier is your contact. Matt can be reached via phone at (970) 349-4030. Please reach out at least 2 weeks in advance to ensure you have time to secure required insurance and manage other considerations. Keep in mind that the resort has a lease with the Forest Service and your shoot may require both Forest Service and Resort permission.
Crested Butte Land Trust
The Crested Butte Land Trust is a private non-profit corporation that owns and manages land to provide economic, social, and economic benefits in the Gunnison Valley. They require “short term activity” permits as described in their Land Use Protocol document for any commercial photo or video shoots on Land Trust land. Hedda Peterson is your contact for all requests and we advise reaching out as early as possible to allow for enough staff time to process your request. Hedda is available via email or phone at (970) 349-1206.
Private Land Owners
If you’re on a compressed timeline, you may be able to obtain permission to film on private land with more speed than the time it takes to get a permit on federal lands, depending on the scale of your project and budget. If you have a particular type of location in mind, we may be able to connect you with a willing landowner. Email John Norton or give him a call at (970) 379-5498.
To do your own research about private land, the Gunnison County Assessor’s website has a database of property owners that is searchable by multiple methods (map, owner name, parcel number, etc.) that is updated weekly based on the existing public records provided to the Gunnison County Assessor’s Office.
