Join us at the Crested Butte Library on Tuesday, June 13 at 6 pm for a presentation by Dr. Suzanne Taylor, professor of physics and astronomy at Western Colorado University and Board President of the Gunnison Valley Observatory. Dr. Taylor will cover what to look for in the night sky, best places to observe stars in our Valley, what tools are available (including the library telescopes), and summer events and activities at the Gunnison Valley Observatory. The Gunnison Valley Observatory is a publicly-owned and all-volunteer run facility that offers educational experiences throughout the summer season at their facility on CR 28 by Hartman Rocks in Gunnison. There are public astronomy programs on Friday and Saturday nights from June 16 though August 16, 2023. There are family-friendly astronomy talks and viewings through a variety of small telescopes, and dome tours featuring viewings through the iconic 30-inch telescope. The astronomy presentation at the Gunnison Library is free and open to all.

Annual events in Crested Butte and Gunnison

Gunnison Valley is also host to several beloved annual events. A classic winter event is The Alley Loop, a Nordic ski race that doubles as a costume contest. In fall, Mt. Crested Butte hosts the famous Chili and Beer Festival. Every summer in Gunnison, a crowd gathers to watch America’s fourth-oldest rodeo, Cattlemen’s Days. There are also festivals in Crested Butte that celebrate local art, music, wildflowers, and more. Attending an annual event is a good way to connect with the culture of the Gunnison Valley. You might even create a new tradition for you and your family and friends!
