M. John Fayhee is coming to Crested Butte to read from and sign copies of his latest book, ÒA Long Tangent: Musings from an old man, his young dog & a quest to hike every day for a year.Ó ÒI am really looking forward to returning to Townie Books, where I have done numerous readings in the past,Ó Fayhee says. ÒI am also looking forward to re-visiting the Eldo and Kochevars to talk about literature, philosophy and narrative technique. Or to just drink beer.Ó ÒA Long TangentÓ Ñ the preface of which was penned by Craig Childs Ñ is not just a linear tale. It includes many interfaces with memory lane. Fayhee writes about mortality, hiking sticks, trail names, the relationship hikers have with their vehicles, mystery mountains, stinky socks, debilitating hangovers, poison ivy, stupidity, getting lost, getting found, the gentrification of the American West and, most of all, his love of hiking through wild lands with his dog. ÒThis volume is a stylistic potpourri, with some chapters as short as one line and some as long as 6,000 words,Ó Fayhee says. ÒThis is the book IÕve wanted to write my entire life.Ó FayheeÕs previous books include ÒUp at Altitude: A celebration of life in the High Country,Ó ÒBottoms UpÓ and ÒSmoke Signals,Ó the latter of which was a Colorado Book Award finalist.
Gunnison Valley is also host to several beloved annual events. A classic winter event is The Alley Loop, a Nordic ski race that doubles as a costume contest. In fall, Mt. Crested Butte hosts the famous Chili and Beer Festival. Every summer in Gunnison, a crowd gathers to watch America’s fourth-oldest rodeo, Cattlemen’s Days. There are also festivals in Crested Butte that celebrate local art, music, wildflowers, and more. Attending an annual event is a good way to connect with the culture of the Gunnison Valley. You might even create a new tradition for you and your family and friends!
