Little Richard: I Am Everything

June 25, 2023 @ 7:30 pm

$15
Gunnison Sunset

Summertime: we want to be outside; but come the night, let’s gather together, sip a cold one, snack on popcorn, and see the best in modern movies. This summer, Crested Butte Film Festival presents three films, and who better to kick them off than the unnamed king of rock-n-roll, Little Richard. Join us at The Majestic Theatre, 7:30, June 25th and we’ll whop-bob-a-lu-bop, buh-domp-bam-bam. That’s right, Tutti-Fruitti, Little Richard shines all his magnificence (even the parts he later hides) in the brand-new Sundance film, Little Richard: I Am Everything, and my oh my, he is. Way before Elvis, Little Richard was the originator, the emancipator of rock-n-roll; a gay, queer, musical spectacle “playing wild music that freed white kids.” Little Richard gave the world permission to be – to be who you wanted to be – to be who you were, even if he couldn’t fully live that himself. Come experience this magnificent story of the rock-n-roll legend, one that shines a clarifying light on the man, and the Black, queer origins of rock’n’roll, exuberantly and passionately reclaiming a history and a style that was willfully appropriated by white artists and institutions. Little Richard: I Am Everything. June 25th, 7:30pm. The Majestic Theatre. $15. See the trailer and buy tickets at cbfilmfest.org. Next, on July 16th, Crested Butte Film Festival travels Down Under, deep into the ocean, for Blueback – a complex and emotional film about a mother and daughter’s passion for the ocean and each other. In it, a young woman recalls her childhood spent living in connection with the ocean, and her mother’s efforts to protect the bay from greedy developers and invasive fishermen – often to the detriment of their own relationship. The film stars Mia Wasikowska, Radha Mitchell, and Eric Bana in this poignant, visually stunning film that serves as a beautiful reminder of the power within us all to make a difference and to save what we love the most. Blueback, July 16th, 7:30pm. The Majestic Theatre. $15. See the trailer and buy tickets at cbfilmfest.org. Finally – and what could be better than this – a night under the stars, experiencing the transcendent music of David Bowie in the artistic and musical masterpiece, Moonage Daydream. That’s right: camping chairs, sleeping bags and blankets at Crested Butte Community School celebrating the first night of the Crested Butte Arts Festival and this beautiful place we live. Join us for this free presentation (donations welcome) and we’ll rocket along with Major Tom for this one-of-a-kind, cinematic experience. The film, a hypnotic blend of music and art, has been called, “Visionary. Astounding. Spectacular. And pure cinema.” And it’s Bowie – always light years ahead in fashion, music, and thought, and as he said himself, “Ever since I was sixteen, I was determined to have the greatest adventures any one person could have.”And he did. And so will we, under the stars, Friday night, August 4. Moonage Daydream, August 4th, 8pm, Crested Butte Community School, part of the 51st annual Crested Butte Arts Festival. See the trailer and all CBFF events at cbfilmfest.org. The 13th annual Crested Butte Film Festival is fully in-person on the streets of Crested Butte, September 27 – October 1. cbfilmfest.org
