Since winter conditions are frequent in the Rocky Mountains, it’s a good idea to research your route before hitting the road. Like most of the Rocky Mountain region, the Gunnison Valley is prone to wildfires. Check the U. S. Forest Service website to learn about fire restrictions in the Grand Mesa, Uncompahgre and Gunnison (GMUG) national forests. You’ll also find information on current wildfires.
