Gunnison Nordic Club

Who is Gunnison Nordic Club?

Gunnison Nordic Club is a nonprofit in Gunnison that grooms trails for Nordic skiing. The Nordic Club grooms for cross-country skiing at Hartman Rocks Recreation Area, Van Tuyl Ranch, Dos Rios Golf Club, the Western Colorado University practice field and Jorgensen Park. Mill Creek is groomed early season but becomes more of a touring location later in the season when the snow is deeper. The trails at Hartman Rocks range from green to black. Green trails can be accessed from the McCabe Lane Trailhead. Blue and black trails can be accessed from the front entrance. Kill Hill is a black trail. The trails at Van Tuyl are mostly flat and easy. These trails are on a working ranch. Abiding by signage is important to avoid disturbing the cows. Dos Rios Golf Club has a variety of trails. You can ski them individually for a short ski, or connect them to make longer loops. The practice field at Western Colorado University is great for beginners or a quick lunchtime lap. There is even a small hill to practice going downhills on. The trail at Jorgensen Park is flat. There is also a waxing room for ski maintenance at the park. Trails are groomed for classic and skate skiing. Classic skiers should stick to the parallel tracks while the corduroy snow is for skate skiers. The Nordic Club also sponsors events and activities aimed at promoting Nordic skiing in Gunnison. These include summer and spring trail clean up days, fundraisers, moonlight skis and the Cottonwood Classic, a bike ride to benefit the Nordic Club. Gunnison Nordic also offers classic and skate skiing lessons for children and adults. Learn both or sharpen your skills with one of them.
