Crested Butte Mountain Bike Association is the oldest mountain bike club on the planet! Founded in 1983 as a riding club, CBMBA’s professional trail crew now maintains more than 450 miles of trail around Crested Butte. CBMBA works to balance recreation with conservation, minimizing the environmental impacts of trails when possible. CBMBA hosts community trail work days throughout the summer. 

The Crested Butte Land Trust was founded in 1991 and works to protect the many ways of life in Colorado’s Gunnison Valley by protecting open lands for vistas, recreation, wildlife and ranching. CB Land Trust has preserved 6,000 acres of land in perpetuity, including some of the iconic vistas around Crested Butte. Support the Crested Butte Land Trust as it works to preserve the present for the future.

The Gunnison County Sustainable Tourism and Outdoor Recreation (STOR) Committee facilitates communication between the many organizations that have a stake in public land stewardship. This unique group consists of representatives from the BLM, the Forest Service, the county tourism association, ranching and agricultural groups, wildlife and conservation advocates, Western Colorado University, and more. 

The Crested Butte Avalanche Center (CBAC) provides local avalanche forecasts for the vast backcountry surrounding Crested Butte and Gunnison, Colorado. Backcountry skiers, splitboarders and snowmobilers rely on the forecasts to make informed decisions when traveling through avalanche terrain. 

The Gunnison Public Lands Initiative (GPLI) is a coalition of stakeholders from ten community groups with interests including ranching, water resources and outdoor recreation. Based on GPLI’s recommendations, the Gunnison Outdoor Resources Protection Act (the “GORP Act”) was released by Senator Michael Bennet’s office for public review. This critical piece of conservation legislation would change some land use rules around the Gunnison County. 

The High Country Conservation Advocates (HCCA) was founded in 1977. HCCA was originally formed to protect Mt. Emmons, also known as Red Lady, from a proposed molybdenum mine. HCCA has developed public lands and water programs to protect our natural resources such as lands, water and wildlife. Their goal is to protect landscapes and ecosystems and promote sustainable recreation on the public lands in Gunnison County.

Gunnison Nordic Club is a non-profit organization that grooms 45 kilometers of trails for cross-country skiing in the Gunnison area. Gunnison Nordic grooms at Hartman Rocks Recreation Area, Van Tuyl Ranch, Dos Rios Golf Course and more. This amenity is provided to the community by generous volunteers who donate their time to grooming trails.
