DESCRIPTION:Join Colorado historian Duane Vadenbusche for an engaging lecture and slideshow about the history of Camp Hale. FREE Camp Hale was a high-altitude U.S. Army training facility built in 1942 in central Colorado for the elite 10th Mountain Division. Located between Red Cliff and Leadville\, soldiers trained there in alpine and Nordic skiing\, mountaineering\, and cold-weather survival. Decommissioned in 1945\, the site was designated Camp Hale-Continental Divide National Monument in 2022\, preserving its military legacy while supporting continued recreation and public access.

DESCRIPTION:Join our Crested Butte Mayor\, Ian Billick\, for Feburary book club. “From the Age of Exploration to the Age of Discovery” embeds field research at RMBL in the larger context of exploration and discovery\, from the fall of Constantinople in 1453 that sparked exploration\, through the emergence of the scientific societies in the 17th century\, and the geological survey of the Gunnison Basin in the 19th century. It peaks into the future\, talking about the transition from carbon-based systems\, such as life and fossil fuels\, to silicon-based systems\, including computers\, AI\, and renewable energy. Participants will have a chance to look at some of the early books in my collection from the 18th and 19th century documenting the period of exploration and discovery. DESCRIPTION:Join Colorado historian Dr. Duane Vandenbusche at the Elevation Hotel for an engaging presentation on the history of skiing. Explore the rich skiing history of the Gunnison Valley through archival images and stories from the 11 lift-assisted ski resorts that have operated here from 1880 to the present\, including four ski areas in and around Crested Butte: the Pershing Mine Ski Hill\, Rozman Hill\, Pioneer (home to the first chairlift in Colorado)\, and\, of course\, the Crested Butte Ski Area. Learn about the early mailmen who carried mail on skis\, including Al Johnson and Alex Parent\, as well as the incredible feats of Crested Butte’s gelŠnde jumpers. Dr. Vandenbusche came to the Gunnison Valley in 1962 to teach history at Western and has since authored nearly a dozen books. Tickets include light aprs and non-alcoholic beverages. DESCRIPTION:Calling all caregivers of little ones\, bring yourself and your mini crew over to the museum on select Monday mornings for a free casual\, unstructured play hour with other parents and their tots before regular business hours. Geared towards kids age five and younger\, but all are welcome. Be sure to bring quarters for the train! The Museum will be closed for general admission during this playtime. The closed sign will be up on the front door but it will be unlocked. Come on in and join us in the exhibit space! Children must be accompanied by an adult caregiver.
