Author Michael Engelhard will discuss his memoir\, Arctic Traverse: A Thousand-Mile Summer of Trekking the Brooks Range. About the book: A lyrical memoir that interweaves wilderness\, homeland\, cultural connections\, historical figures\, humor\, and gritty experiences across northern Alaska\, Arctic Traverse: A Thousand-Mile Summer of Trekking the Brooks Range takes readers along on a once-in-a-lifetime journey. From the award-winning author of Ice Bear: The Cultural History of an Arctic Icon comes an intimate exploration of AlaskaÕs northernmost mountain range with observations on Indigenous cultures\, conservation\, and intense cross-country travel\, all shaped by respect for the land. Follow author Michael Engelhard through tussock-studded tundra for a remarkable tale of bear encounters and white-knuckled river moments\, as well as poetic reflections on a vast\, untamed landscape. A trained anthropologist\, Engelhard evokes classic writers like Edward Abbey\, Barry Lopez\, and Ellen Meloy with profound dives into human and natural history and vivid meditations on Alaskan wildlife\, flora\, and geology. When he embarked on this thru-hike\, fewer people had completed it solo in a single push than had dived to the floor of the Mariana Trench\, the deepest part of EarthÕs oceans. SUMMARY:Memorial Day Parade
DESCRIPTION:The Crested Butte Memorial Day Parade has been a community staple for well over 100 years. It is a chance for us to come together and remember those who gave their lives defending our freedoms and those who gave their lives to this valley. Families with deep roots in Crested Butte travel from across the country to clean the graves of their relatives in the cemetery\, remember their ancestors\, and see the faces of friends old and new. The parade itself starts at 2nd and Elk Ave at the Old Town Hall\, proceeds down Elk Ave to the 4-Way Stop\, turns North on 6th St and proceeds to the Crested Butte Cemetery. At the cemetery there is a service at the chapel that lasts about an hour and 20 minutes. After the service participants march back to the Old Town Hall.

This free event is hosted by your local chapter of Trout Unlimited (TU) and is open to the public. The guest speaker\, Ken Iwamasa\, an author and originator of more than twenty-five fly patterns\, has published many articles in Fly Fisherman and Fly Tyer Magazines. Mr. Iwamasa’s presentation will summarize the results of his recent 2022-2024 mayfly surveys on the upper Arkansas River and provide insights into the resurgence of the Baetis mayfly hatches that occur every month on the river.

This event could not be possible without the help of the CPW\, USFS\, NPS\, TU\, West Elk Archers\, Alpine Outfitters\, Gene Taylors\, Taylor Park Marina\, City Market\, Walmart\, Berfield’s\, and the City of Gunnison.
