DESCRIPTION:Fara Tolno from Guinea\, West Africa will be teaching drum classes for youth and adults this February 13th. Fara is a fun and engaging teacher who is passionate about sharing his culture. Drums will be provided for use or bring your own if you have it. All ages of kids are welcome but children under 7 need to be accompanied by an adult. Adults of all levels are welcome to class. If you have never played a hand drum before this is an offering you don’t want to miss! This is a fantastic opportunity for cultural exchange and enrichment and welcomes all people to come learn the rhythms of the drum. In his new book Life After Dead Pool\, journalist Zak Podmore brings to life the magnificent terrain of canyon country and its complex water politics\, presenting an ultimately hopeful portrait of a Colorado River on the brink of rebirth. In the words of the New York Times\, Podmore shows how climate change in the Southwest offers the “opportunity for a more sustainable future.” Zak Podmore is an award-winning author and journalist who has spent more than a decade writing about water and conservation issues in the western United States. He is the author of two books published by Torrey House Press\, Confluence: Navigating the Personal & Political on Rivers of the New West (2019) and Life After Dead Pool: Lake Powell’s Last Days and the Rebirth of the Colorado River (2024). Zak is the recipient of the Ellen Meloy Fund for Desert Writers award and was the Entrada Institute’s writer-in-residence in 2023. Until recently\, Zak was the southern Utah reporter for The Salt Lake Tribune. He lives in Bluff\, Utah. This event is free & open to the public.

DESCRIPTION:The Way of Compassion Dharma Center is located in Carbondale\, Colorado. The sister Dharma center is the Here and Now Center in Gunnison\, CO. We also serve a virtual sangha of distributed practitioners across the nation. We are a Rime (non-sectarian) Buddhist center dedicated to the cultivation of wisdom and compassion through the study of Buddhist Dharma. Every Wednesday (except Holiday weeks – please call to check) from 6:00- 7:30 pm join us and our spiritual director John Bruna for a guided meditation and talk with time for questions. This is a live Zoom broadcast that we watch on a projector as a group from Gunnison. Chairs\, meditation cushions\, and bathroom provided.
