Gunnison Sunset

Join us at the Crested Butte Library on Tuesday, June 6 at 6 pm for a Summer Wildflower Preview with local wildflower guide and author, Rick Reavis. Rick published, ÒRocky Mountain Wildflower Guide: Crested Butte, Colorado & beyondÓ as a resource to Crested Butte residents and visitors alike. This is a Field Guide Booklet intended for the enthusiasts in their quest to identify Wildflowers and Shrubs found in Sagebrush, Aspen/Conifer Forests, Mountain Meadows and Alpine Areas of the Rocky Mountains. Rick shares his knowledge through as an interpretive guide Rocky Mountain Biological Laboratory and by leading wildflower hikes with Crested Butte Wildflower Festival during summer seasons. As we gear up for what is expected to be a big wildflower season, Rick will present an overview of the most common area wildflower and basic identification techniques. Participants will also have a hands-on opportunity to identify flowers during this session. More about Rick Reavis: Rick gained a love of adventure likely from moving around the country twenty eight times during his youth. Settling in Oklahoma, he married his High School sweetheart, Margaret and together they raised three children, now all grown. He completed a Master of Science in Ornamental Horticulture from Oklahoma State University. As a Tenured Associate Professor at Oklahoma State University, Oklahoma City, he spent several years teaching classes in Plant Identification, Landscape Maintenance and General Horticulture. He was founder and owner of a twenty-seven year award-winning landscape development company in Oklahoma. He has been exploring the many plant species found in the Rocky Mountains since the mid-1980s. He is a former president of the board of directors of the Crested Butte Wildflower Festival. Working at the Weldon and Rosalie Weekley Visitor Center and Store brings him much gratitude sharing all RMBL has to offer to the general public. During spare time in the summer, he works as a Wildflower Guide for the Crested Butte Wildflower Festival, rides and hikes the many miles of trails around Crested Butte. In the winter, he can be found teaching folks how to ski with better efficiency around the mountain as a Ski Instructor. (RMBL) Copies of RickÕs wildflower guide will be available to purchase through Townie Books after the event. This event is free and open to the public.

Annual events in Crested Butte and Gunnison

Gunnison Valley is also host to several beloved annual events. A classic winter event is The Alley Loop, a Nordic ski race that doubles as a costume contest. In fall, Mt. Crested Butte hosts the famous Chili and Beer Festival. Every summer in Gunnison, a crowd gathers to watch America’s fourth-oldest rodeo, Cattlemen’s Days. There are also festivals in Crested Butte that celebrate local art, music, wildflowers, and more. Attending an annual event is a good way to connect with the culture of the Gunnison Valley. You might even create a new tradition for you and your family and friends!
