While on the road with their band Free the Honey in 2014, Lizzy and Jenny had a conversation with a scholar and radio host at East Tennessee State University, who used the word Jollification to describe the feeling he got from their fiddle playing. Never having heard the word, the ladies inquired and he explained, “Jollification” is a word that comes from the early 1800s to describe how immigrant fiddlers of Appalachia would roam the streets during times of merriment. They liked it! Who doesn’t love adding more joy to the world. So, the Jollification Project was born!
Jenny and Lizzy both grew up playing fiddle/violin. Jenny learned texas-style and ear-based folk music mostly from her father, in Dripping Springs, TX while Lizzy’s education, growing up in Nashville, TN was classical Suzuki violin, and her folk tune life came later after moving to Colorado. The two young ladies met in 2012 and once they discovered the joys of fiddlin’ together, they never stopped. They joke that if they can help it, they’ll be 80-years old someday sittin’ on the porch swing somewhere fiddling with big ole smiles on their faces! Cause why not!?
The Jollification Project is all about fun and is collaborative in nature. Lizzy and Jenny enjoy playing often with guitarist Sam Pankratz and bassist Mike Facey, as well as having dancers like Adge Marziano join them to add to the show. Besides the sounds of their two fiddles in harmony, playing ole-time, bluegrass, Celtic, Swedish and swing, Jenny will play a tune or two on banjo and Lizzy on Guitar. Harmony singing is part of every tune they do, and they hope to get a holler in here or there!
