InSights & InPerson Connections: The Training and Deployment of the 10th Mountain Division in World War II

January 20 @ 6:00 pm - 7:00 pm

$5
Gunnison Sunset

Join us with Dr. Chris Juergens, the Anschutz Associate Curator of Military History at History Colorado, as he discusses the training and deployment of the 10th Mountain Division in World War II. While most western armies had a tradition of mountain and ski troops, the US Army needed to play catch-up, and selected Colorado as the home for a new unit dedicated to this kind of specialized warfare. After years of training, the 10th Mountain Division participated in the brutal fighting in Italy during the last offensives of World War II in Europe. Dr. Chris Juergens is the Anschutz Associate Curator of Military History at History Colorado.

Gunnison Valley is also host to several beloved annual events. A classic winter event is The Alley Loop, a Nordic ski race that doubles as a costume contest. In fall, Mt. Crested Butte hosts the famous Chili and Beer Festival. Every summer in Gunnison, a crowd gathers to watch America’s fourth-oldest rodeo, Cattlemen’s Days. There are also festivals in Crested Butte that celebrate local art, music, wildflowers, and more. Attending an annual event is a good way to connect with the culture of the Gunnison Valley. You might even create a new tradition for you and your family and friends!
