As the snow recedes higher into the mountains, the excitement of summer looms. There are a few events that are so quintessentially Gunnison Valley that they deserve a spot on the calendar.
The Original Growler-May 27-28
The Original Growler race is the epitome of Gunnison mountain biking.
This 64-mile race through the 8,000 acre Hartman Rocks Recreation Area is the unofficial kickoff to summer fun in the Gunnison Valley. If 64 miles of hard hitting desert single track is too much this early in the season, there is a Half Growler option at 32 miles. Registration cost will all go back to support Gunnison Trails so that riding will be great all summer long.
Gunnison River Festival-June 22-25
The Gunnison River makes up about 10% of the Colorado River runoff. This pristine watershed offers up some of the best recreation in the state and deserves to be celebrated. The festival areas span from the Taylor River in Almont to the whitewater park in Gunnison. Enjoy a weekend of beers, boats, and fishing whilst exploring the Gunnison Valley’s waterways.
Crested Butte Music Festival-June 23-August 5
Running through the peak of Crested Butte summer, Crested Butte Music Festival offers a world class musical line-up that covers symphony, opera, gypsy jazz and much more. Events are held in, “Victoria”, the Mirror Palace Spiegeltent brought in from Belgium. With shows scheduled every couple of days, this is one of the great things to do in Crested Butte.
Crested Butte Wildflower Festival-July 7-16
The Crested Butte Wildflower Festival kicks off during the peak of blooming in the “Wildflower Capital of Colorado”. With over 300 events, the festival offers a huge variety of activities. Learn to forage for your own meal, paint the gorgeous vistas, or just go on an educational hike.
Crested Butte Arts Festival-August 4-6
The Crested Butte Arts Festival is celebrating its 45th year in 2017. The town becomes a pedestrian mall as the event takes up the entire Elk Ave strip in downtown Crested Butte. 175 exhibitors bring their craftsmanship to be put on display. Entry is free, there will be live entertainment, food, and plenty of art.
Outerbike Crested Butte-August 18-20
The best mountain bike demo event in the Universe is coming to Crested Butte, the home of mountain biking, for the very first time. Outerbike is a must attend if you are in the market for a new bike, or if you just want to ride some really nice bikes. With over 1000 bikes from most manufacturers big and small, there are too many bikes to try in one weekend. Event entry includes unlimited demos, food, beer, and entertainment.
Blue Mesa Beach Bash-August 26
Colorado’s largest body of water, the Blue Mesa Reservoir, is home to the second annual Blue Mesa Beach Bash. This SUP festival will be at the Old Stevens Creek day area on Highway 50 west of Gunnison and will include races, clinics, yoga and everything else SUP. Come play for the day and camp along the miles of beaches at Blue Mesa Reservoir.
