A Better Way to Beat the Houston Heat

Sticky, muggy, sweltering, oppressive … you’ve probably got a few choice words of your own to describe the weather. Houston’s average summer temperature is around 93 degrees. While that’s perfect for the pool or a beach day, we could use a break from it too.

Imagine waking up to cool mornings this summer, where “hot” days are around 75 degrees. Imagine a place where there is relatively no humidity, welcoming outdoor adventures and relaxing mountain views. Imagine your perfect summer vacation. Lucky for you this place doesn’t have to exist only in your imagination. It’s called Colorado’s Gunnison Valley.

Home to the towns of Gunnison, Crested Butte, Mt. Crested Butte, and Almont, the Gunnison Valley is surrounded by the rustic and spectacular Rocky Mountains. A few Texans have already discovered this perfect summer paradise, made it their second home, and visit regularly. Now you have the chance to easily join them. The Gunnison Crested Butte Regional Airport is now offering additional direct flights to and from Houston. Get to the airport and be here, just like that:

Once you’ve arrived, it’s time to indulge in what the Gunnison Valley has to offer. Here are five activities that will ensure your summer is well spent this year:

Dining on Elk Avenue

Elk Avenue is Main Street USA in the mountains. Home to numerous top notch restaurants, you can enjoy eating inside or out on the patio in most places. A few steakhouses complement cuisine from all over the world including Thai, Mexican, French, Asian, and of course, American.

Fly Fishing Hot Spots

Cast a line surrounded by pure bliss. Let our anglers provide the transportation, meals, gear, and expertise to catching that dream “whopper.” The sun will shine, the river will flow, and the fish will bite.

Scenic Drives: Car, Jeep, ATV

There is no easier way to enjoy the views the valley has to offer than renting a car, jeep, or ATV. Cruise around Black Canyon National Park (deeper than the Grand Canyon!), up mountain passes, and to peaceful backcountry wilderness in the comfort of your rental.

Embrace the Wildflowers

Crested Butte is known as the Wildflower Capital of Colorado. You will be amazed at the variety of vibrant colors and species that are found in the high altitudes.

Live Outdoor Concerts: Free for ALL

Alpenglow in the Park in Crested Butte on Mondays, Sundays at 6 in Gunnison, and the Mt. CB concert series on Wednesdays are all free and open to the public. Bring the kids, snacks, and dancing shoes. With beautfiul mountain backdrops, you won’t find a better musical venue.

So don’t try to endure the Houston heat this entire summer. Embrace the cool fresh air of Colorado’s mountains and find your second home here in The Gunnison Valley. Whether it’s for a weekend, a couple weeks, or the entire summer, you won’t regret it.
